Many people are enamoured with Bollywood the world over because Bollywood has had such an enormous cultural impact! For example, Bollywood music is often used in Indian wedding dances at both Indian and non-Indian weddings when either the bride and groom or someone in their party wants to put on a choregraphed dance.

The term "Bollywood" is a created portmanteau word by combining the name "Bombay" - which is now called Mumbai - and that of another symbol of the cinematographic industry, in this particular case American: "Hollywood”.

Used in the Western world, this term is nevertheless very badly connoted in India, because it is thought that is the name assumes it is a cheap knock off of Hollywood, when in fact Bollywood is the more successful of the two.

A lot of the Western World discovered Indian cinema in 2002 with the success of the movie "Devdas" directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali with Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai as the star. What some of you may not know is that Aishwarya is the former miss World.

In May, 2002,the who team behind the movie got to walk onstage at the Cannes Film Festival. It is the 1st Indian movie to be presented with an award at the famous French film festival.

Bollywood movies are a big part of Indian culture and also play a big role in conveying Indian culture.
